Here's (hopefully) an easy path to getting Server installed and running. Assuming you're on Windows platform to keep the instructions simple:
Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp and check you have the latest version of the Jave Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. Remember RC is written in Java so to avoid possibke issues keep the JRE on your system up to date.
Create a folder for the RC files
On your local system create a folder called C:\selenium\rc to store the files you're about to download.
Download Remote Control
Head over to http://seleniumhq.org/download/ and grab the latest Selenium RC .zip file. Unzip all folders withinthe .zip into the \rc folder you just created Inside the .zip you'll see a whole bunch of other folders. One is for the RC, called selenium-server just to confuse us, the others are for the particular language you may want to use. The attached .bat file should start Selenium Server for you when you double click it.
Your choice now is of which language to export your IDE generated Selenese tests and write more elaborate scripts in. With that decided you can even create a simple batch file to run those scripts, a crude but simple way to get started.
U get that [couldnot contact selenium server ....] error when u wont start selenium server and start Running Test case from Eclipse ..
Open the command prompt and browse to seleniym Remote control directory..below line assumes SeleniumRC to be located under C:\ Drive ..hence slenium server can be started using the following command
C:\selenium-remote-control-1.0.1\selenium-server-1.0.1>java -jar selenium-server.jar
This will start selenium server at port 4444 if u want to change the port then use
java -jar selenium-server.jar -port 4466
