I have face this question two time.
I read through a number of posts in this group, and I feel I can comment.
Many of you ask "what should I say if I am asked this question...", and then you list a generic question such as "WHY YOU CHOOSE SOFTWARE TESTING AS YOUR CAREER".
When I interview candidates and ask a question like this, there is no one generic answer. This question, by definition, is about getting to know you, what drives you, what motivates you, what makes you "tick" and why do you find this industry interesting. You might be only looking for a job, and it doesn't really matter what job you get, granted, but if you are truly interested in Software Testing as a career of choice, stating why you want it is exactly what you need to say. There are 1000 possible good answers, as long as you are natural and honest about it. Let the interviewer see the passion you have for testing and why you find it interesting, rather than providing a standard answer that you assume they anticipate.
I tend to do my interviews different than others, perhaps, but what I am interested is to understand how the person thinks, how they react in situations they never faced, and so on, because, after all, that is what we do on a daily basis in software industry. To all these questions there are no standard answers that you should memorize. Let your inner self shine and let people like you for who you are.
Then there are the technical questions, where people try to determine if you really have the skills you state you have. Even in these situations, I disagree with managers that start asking you questions that you can answer by memorizing a manual that teaches you that particular situation. I rather see how you handle a hands on problem, tell me how you think, how you solve a problem how you think about the bigger picture, how you are able to understand architecture and many other things.
Memorizing answers from a text book has zero value to me.
Oh, before I forget... certifications are also a big waste of time, they will never make you a better tester, just because you answer 40 questions from which you select the "right" answer, especially when, arguably, many of the questions have exactly 0 correct answers (even though those testing you there will disagree).
Did I get you intrigued yet? If yes, that's good.
Start using your best testing tool. You all possess it! Imagine taking your hands and putting them to the sides of your head. You are now holding the best testing tool there is, your brain!
Be yourself, be awesome testers!
