As per best practice from software testing services,

Forward Compatibility Testing: To verify that a developed software or hardware is compatible with future versions of other platforms or not.
Example: When a new android application is developed then that application should run properly on the current and new android OS as well.

Backward Compatibility Testing: To verify that a developed software or hardware is compatible with older platforms or not.
Example: When a new android application is developed then that application should run on latest android OS and should also run on the older android OS as well.
