Sekhar,

Usually Test Estimations happened before SOW sign off, those estimation we called ball park estimation (or High level estimations) which contains +/- 20% variance once we get actual requirements (or BRD).

How you will do HLE?

Using WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) model we do these.  You can google further on this model.

How you will do realistic automation effort estimation?

Using FPA (Functional Point Analysis) or TCP (Test Case Point), I like FPA.

I believe i answered your question, let me know if you still need more information.

My ideas when you estimation for new project, you can make follow steps by steps such as:
1.Reading carefull requirements, Use case, Specification,...
2.Create Q&A to customer if you don't clearly anything
3.(1&2 have been finished)
Create exel file with some column such as:
+ Reading Req & OutLine:
How many functions: you writes all
How many testcases for all funtions?
Time?
Man-day or man-month?
+ Write test case:
How many functions: you writes all
How many testcases for all funtions?
Time?
Man-day or man-month?

Good luck to you

What estimates you want? Effort/Time/Cost?

I think you are asking about time estimation...

You can go for Testpoint analysis estimation..

I think, to estimate for a new project include the below steps:

1. First, base on the project's detail design

2. List all the main functions then a medium functions that are contains in the main functions

3. From the list of the above functions, calculate how many test cases will be made from there

4. Count all the planned test cases then count the people who will join to test.

5. Calculate how many average of test cases will be tested by a people in a day (8h) - this base on the difficult of each function

6. Calculate how many average of test cases will be tested by all the people in a day

7. From the above number of test cases will be tested in a day, take the total test cases device for the above number and the result is the days will be use

That's all

have fun!!!
