Yes, we write test cases for database testing.

for example

1.Check primary key
2.Check foreign key
3.Check joins to establish relations.
4.Check for total count.
5.Check whether records are properly stored or not in there respective tables.
6.Check for integrety
7.Check datatypes as well as its properties of fields.
8.Check indexing.

It is always better to write a separate set of test scenarios and test cases for database testing. This is so that your written test cases don't get mixed with the other test cases for UI Testing. Database is a form of grey box testing as you have some knowledge about the inner workings of the application. You need to have a good idea about the database structure. Sometimes an application is using more than one database and it is imperative that you know in what capacity each database works. You should know in which table the data is saved when a Save action is performed on the UI. Sometimes a new row is created in one table and another row is updated in a separate table. All these actions need to be carefully monitored to test a database successfully. SQL skills are also necessary when testing databases so that the exact data can be extracted from a table without having to read through thousands of rows in a database table. Hope that this helps.
