Severity : How much seriousness of bug in terms of functionality
Priority : How much important to fix the bug in end user point of view
Severity: It denotes how crucial is a bug. It need not affect the fuctionality
Example : The clients logo may be displayed wrongly in an application its not going to affect the functionality but from the clients perspective its a high sever bug.
Priority : Usually priority depends on the severity . It denotes what preference to be given for fixing that bug.
Severity : How critical is the defect from a functional stand point.
Priority : How critical is the defect from a Business stand point.
Example : A defect can be high priority but less severe. e.g. A wrong logo on client Home page has a strong business impact but has a very less functionality impact. So it will be a High Priority but low severity defect.
Severity---Severity is, impact of defect on application. How defect bad is.
Priority----Priority is,How long it will take fix this issue.
Tester is decided Severity/Priority for Developer.
Essentially the person testing the application assigns severity and priority of the defect.
However, if there is a further defect triage done on the defects then the severity and priority of the defects can be changed by the attendees of the triage meeting who are mostly various leads, managers and Business Analysts.
Hi Anushri,
The Tester/Developer(Both) should give the priority based on severity of the bug
Severity means: is the impact of the bug on the app.i.e seriousness of the bug interms of the functionality.
Priority means: is how soon it should get fixed i.e importance of the bug interms of customer.
@Anushri
Well Severity is given by testers and Priority is given by Develop Team Lead to their developers. This is what we follow in our company ..... Redmond. Silicon Valley. Testers are not allowed to mention priority.

Adding example
1.Suppose a google page is loading, and the google is mispelled in that page then what will be its severity and priority.
Answer: Severity ---> Low and Priority ---> High
Because the spelling mistake would not cause functionality of google page but will affect the prestige of google as we know google is a big brand.
so it shoule be fixed as soon as possible.
Regards
Ajay
