Quality is delighting customers
Tarun Lalwani is a QTP Expert
working in Infosys. Quality Testing interviewed him recently, to
discuss about the QTP Tool.

We hope that this interview will be useful for you.
QT: Can you tell us a bit
about yourself and what you do?
TL: I am Tarun
Lalwani and have done my BE in Computer Science from NSIT, Delhi. I
started my IT career in 2004 and currently work as an Automation
& Solution consultant at Infosys.
QT: How did you get an idea to start http://www.knowledgeinbox.com website?
TL: My interest
in automation of system testing led me to exploring QTP. After few
months of
learning, I realized the need for
sharing my knowledge on a global platform. The idea gave birth
to
KnowledgeInbox. After its inception
the site has had a great response and feedback from users around
the globe.
QT: Tell us brief about QuickTest Professional Unplugged book? Is this book is sufficient for QTP beginners and experts?
TL: QuickTest Professional Unplugged is the first ever book on QTP. Published in May 2009, the book gives a pragmatic view of QTP. The book assumes that the reader has basic knowledge of VBScript & QTP (record/replay of scripts). It then builds up the knowledge feature by feature in a very structured manner. The book can be used by beginners as well experts. It highlights few of the undocumented features of QTP which cannot be found any other documentation. The preview of the book can be downloaded here. For more details on the book click here.
QT: What is the latest
version of QTP? and what are the new features updated in Latest
version?
TL: Latest version
of QTP is v11. I was given an opportunity by HP to beta test it. HP
also presented me with the best feedback award for the same. The
new features of QTP 11 worth mentioning are:
QT: What is the toughest situation that you faced with QTP?
TL: Well there are usually two categories of issues – Technical and process. There have been many technical issues that I have faced but none which I can call as the toughest one. But when it comes to process/architecture design I believe Test data is one of the major challenges of Automation. Automation suites with 1000+ scripts and with each script having different test data needs; it can become very difficult to setup the test data bed. It also becomes difficult to generate test data when there is dependency different (3rd party/external) systems. It is one challenge that I am still working on for creating a optimized solution.
QT: What is your advice to
people who want to learn QTP tool?
TL: Having good knowledge of VBScript and being
able to differentiate between VBScript and QTP
features is very important. I would advice to follow the below
pattern of learning to become a expert in QTP:
QT: What is the importance of Software Testing
Certifications in Testers LIFE? Which one you
recommend?
TL: I have not been much involved in manual
testing so haven't looked at benefits of certification like ISTQB
and all. I really would not be the right person to comment on the
same
QT: How significant is QTP certification to you when you’re
screening candidates for a QTP tester
position?
TL: I am myself QTP certified and I really don't
think the certification tested me to any extent. I would not take
into account QTP certifications when screening any candidates
QT: What is your favorite Functional, Performance, Test
Management and Security Open Source Automation
Tools and Why?
TL: I have only worked with QTP till now and that
is my favorite functional tool. I am in constant touch with HP
providing feedback to them for making QTP even better. I have not
worked in other areas as of now and don't have any other
favorites
QT: Any message to Quality Testing (QT)
Members?
TL: Yes, keep sharing and help others with your
knowledge.
