requirement phase - understand the requirements
design phase - test planning
coding phase - test case development
integration phase - real testing for application / product

Please correct me, if I am wrong
a tester's activities are mostly similar as to a typical STLC activities, only difference is that in time of software design and planning, test design and planing happens which a software tester may or may not perform but should be involved in, and ACTUAL testing happens in parallel with the developer's unit testing.

To follow a V model, at each level of SDLC, some part of testing activity (System, Integration, functional, UAT) should happen in parallel to other development or project activities

As a bureau chief for the state of Florida, I have my testers:
1. test the Requirements, not just know them.
2. test the Design & Analysis, not just be familiar with what is being designed.
3. sit with the Programmers to witness final Dev unit test. Only way to be sure that the developers are doing unit testing.
4. System and Integration testing -> Functional, Smoke and Regression. These tests we automate. I have some testers do manual ad-hoc testing as well.
5. My testers act as host and helpers to the business UAT testers, since they have so much familiarity due to Unit and Systems testing.
6. I also have my testers do security testing.
