Aprana,

If anyone come across a project that is totally new to him/her, then It is advisible that one single person should not be responsible to estimate it and should not commit any deadline to the client. Because the persom may make a mistake in counting man days for a function(s) which may require some R&D stuffs and more extra efforts. Solution to this is arrange a meeting with senior team member(s) after clearly having all requirements from client.Discuss and distributes the requirements among the senior members and ask them to gather related information form net and based on that try to come out with a rough estimation. The senior team members can also involve their juniors to provide their concerns for developing the new project and also raise questions regarding requirements. By doing this practice one may come with an estimation plan where you will have a some idea of total man days and after adding some buffer you can finalize and discuss out delivery dates of the project with the client.

Answer to your second question is, you have to decide priority between your critical work and the CR that has came acrossed. If the CR has heigher priority then you have to allocate a time to it and estimate it. Else you can concentrate on the CR after completing your work.

Now, the case 1 where you have found that the CR has higher priority then your current critical work. Follow the steps

- Firstly, You will need a dedicated time for it. Get free time from the current work

- Look across all the areas related to the CR and sumup all man days in the estimation

- Commint the estimated time

In the second case where your current work has heigher priority then there is no issue because you are going to address the CR once you are done with current work. In this case too, you will have to follow above steps for estimating the CR

Thanks
