I have many years of experience using JMeter. JMeter is an awesome tool!! It support many of the standards available today. It has inherent support for HTTP, HTTPS, web services, POSTs, log-ins and more. It provides a scripting language via the JMeter GUI that allows you to do very interesting things without programming. You can extract variables using regular expression or XPATH arguments. Loops, if statements etc .. again, without programming.
In terms of usability it's pretty straight forward. It can take few days to get going and few weeks to harness JMeter's full power. But once you do, there is not going back.
In terms of installation requirements, it's a Java application. You can download and run it (no installation). As long as you have Java on your system.
To run small tests, there is no problem, you can run from your PC or a dedicated server. Be advised JMeter consumes a lot of memory!
When you want to run large scale load testing, it's a different matter and can prove very challenging.
At BlazeMeter (my company), we provide an out-of-the-box JMeter environment that can ease the pain of setting up a distributed JMeter environment.
If you have any questions or need additional information, you can reach me via the contact form on the site: http://blazemeter.com/contact-us
Hope I helped.
